My Little One Has Moved On From Crawling To Walking
Excited to announce that my little one has graduated from crawling to walking – RUNNING all over the house now.
He turned a year old almost three weeks ago and is now unstoppable!
It was a quick transition from pulling himself up and taking steps around the house while holding onto things. Next thing we knew he had gone from crawling to walking on his own.
A fast graduation which left not only us but him in disbelief!
It is unbelievable how fast he can go for someone who could not walk without support only a week ago. He is so happy and astonished that he can actually walk on his own.
Practice, practice and more practice!
How Do You Help Transition From Crawling To Walking?
Going barefoot helped my little one improve balance and coordination.
Steadier Walking: Although your child may be pretty good at walking he/she may enjoy push-and-pull toys while doing so.
At this age little ones will walk with their legs mostly feet pointed outward which helps maintain stability.
Shoes: Hold off on introducing baby shoes until your baby is walking around outside or on rough or cold surfaces.
Dancing: This is a great time for toddlers to learn how to dance. It might sound like much, but now that they can stand on their own, they are more likely to copy your dance moves.
Climbing: Mine is an expert on climbing up on the bed and sofa. When little ones learn to walk, they discover how much fun climbing can be.
Tripping, Stumbling and Falling: This will continuously happen. Most times babies will cry out of frustration rather than pain when they stumble or fall.
Lack of coordination and the fact that they are still farsighted are factors that come into play here.
There’s no need to panic unless it is a harder or far fall. Which it won’t be because you were right there watching right?
Another new adventure as they coordinate their steps. You may find your little one preferring to go backwards and downstairs rather than upwards. Never leave your little one alone around staircases! CHILDPROOFING: Make sure your home is childproofed. Be at your baby’s side and watch carefully at all times.
What Not To Worry About
Every baby develops differently and at their own pace.
I wrote a post about the milestones of the first six months. I will be updating that post to add on the next six.
Do not compare your baby to others! It is hard yes, but not beneficial to you.
Parents can only do so much to speed up their baby’s development timeline.
Don’t force anything. Just help your baby along no matter what stage they are in.
Enjoy The Moments
encourage your baby to walk by kneeling in front of him. You can also stand and hold your baby’s hands as you help him walk towards you.
Take some pictures and make some memorable videos. I am loving this time with him.
What else can I say? Have fun and happy chasing!
Do you have a baby who recently started walking or is about to? Are your kids grown up and do you remember what it was like when they started walking?
Please share your tips suggestions and experiences with me.
As a first time mom, advice is always welcome!

This is so exciting. Congratulations! I don’t have my own kids yet but I remember how excited I was when my little sister started walking. It’s amazing how quickly little ones develop.
When I had my first one, I was so careful about everything from his first crawl to his first walk..but with the second one, I took it easy and realised that, I have been enjoying my second one much more than I did with my first one. But yes, great tips indeed.
I hear with the first one, parents are always overly cautious but by the time the second or third child comes along, they know what certain cries mean, or are less afraid, so that is definitely a good thing.
Aw, so nice. I don’t have a baby but this will be helpful once I have mine. Haha.. So cute but it’s going to tiring chasing after the little one.
These are some great tips. I know my little guy crawled before his siblings – he wanted to catch up with them! Thank you for sharing these.
Each child achieve milestones at different rates. While my daughter was fully walking at around 10 months, there are others who don’t do it until after a year. Not introducing shoes early is of course one of the best ways. Even now at age 4, she loves being barefoot.
I felt like something that really worked for us was having out littles wear mocs instead of hard soled shoes. It seemed to help them walk a bit faster!
Thanks for the post! I have an 11-month old and he’s reluctant to walk just yet. I can’t figure out why. He’s barefoot most of the time, he’d stand, grab on things, I even have a push walker but once that thing moves, he’d cautiously sit back down. He hasn’t fallen before, seeing he hasn’t even started. =/
But I’ll def try the rest of your tips tho! Thank you!
Ho Yvonne – As a first time mom, I would only guess that he is being cautious – I am sure that when he feels comfortable that he won’t fall down or that the push walker won’t hurt him then he will start to enjoy the fact that he can do it on his own. Thank you for sharing and enjoying this time. It is so precious. xoxo
These are great tips and it is important to remember that everyone does so at their own pace. I have read that going barefoot can be very beneficial to the little ones in helping them learn to balance and coordinate walking.
This is such an exciting time in your child’s life! I love the faces of babies as they finally can get their brain & legs in sync together!
Yes Reesa! Once they get that part down, then there is no stopping them!
That is so exciting! I remember when my kids started walking, it was a tad dangerous! We did a whole lot of toddler-proofing!
The transition from crawling to walking sure does go quickly! I don’t even remember my boys in that in-between stage.
Congrats to your little! This is such an exciting time, seeing your baby grow and be curious.
I love that you reminded moms not to compare. You’re right all babies progress at their own pace.
XO
Aaaaawww! Congratulations! You must be excited. My daughter was taking a few steps by her 1st birthday. I was not worried as each baby is different. even though its annoying when you have people telling u how their kids started walking by the time they were 7 months. Who cares? there’s not award for that. the main thing is to keep encouraging your little one. I would cheer her on when she takes some steps and clap and say “oooh mama i’m proud of u”. she may not understand the words but it always made her smile. She’s running round the house now and is unstoppable. How did you celebrate this milestone?
Thanks so much Nelo! This is such a great an exciting time and he makes me so happy. Babies love it when we clap right? When I clap he smiles this huge and amazing smile and feels so proud of himself. Motherhood is the best thing ever!
