Things You Need To Do To Save Yourself Time
Time management is something many people struggle with. Everyone is busy, whether or not you’ve got kids at home. When you’ve got kids you’ve got to not only manage your own time but to help manage theirs. Especially in the morning. A great habit to adopt is streamlining your routine. If you are constantly running late, rushing to get yourself or your kids ready in the morning, I have some valuable tips for you. These will help you save time in the morning and get you out of the house faster.
1. Leave Everything At The Door
Get everything you need for the next day by the door so you can just grab your stuff and go. The night before, make sure you have everything you need in your handbag. If you are like me and switch handbags every couple of days, invest in a handbag pouch bag in bag organizer. Switch that out without having to re-organize everything.
Stick a note on the door to remind yourself to take an additional item in the morning. Keys, handbags and sunglasses go to the same spot every time I enter my home.
2. Prepare Your Lunch the Night Before
I have lunch at work so I have the benefit of not having to worry about this. However, if you take your lunch to work, or have to prepare lunch for your kids, prepare lunch boxes and containers the night before. Decide on what you are planning for lunch the night before and prepare it in the evening. Stick it in the refrigerator overnight. This is a great way to save time in the morning as it easily shaves off 15 minutes of your time.
3. Streamline Your Shower Routine
If your water heats slowly, turn on the shower and go make your bed. It will take you less than 60 seconds to do it. If your water heats up quickly, or you are not into wasting water, skip this step.
You know warm water strips natural oils from your skin, but also opens up your pores right? Well, instead of showering, drying off then lathering your body with lotion, just use a wet skin moisturizer instead. Just-showered skin best absorbs moisture. If you want to save another 110 – 15 minutes, shower at night instead.
4. Choose Clothes For The Next Day The Night Before
One thing that will help you save time in the morning is planning your outfit for the day the night before. Easy enough right? I check the weather the night before and then my outfit. I don’t do this with my almost-four-year-old because we always end up changing his shirt anyway.
Do this on Sunday night for your outfits for the entire week. When you lay out your clothes ahead of time you have one less thing to do in the morning. Put an end to searching for the right outfit in the morning, while running out of time.
5. Move The Dreaded Alarm Clock
Snooze alarms are not a good idea. Set your alarm and get up at that time. If you hit the snooze button every morning, place your alarm clock on the end of your bedroom. This way it forces you to get out of bed to turn it off and you are less likely to return to bed.
6. Stay Focused In The Morning
If you want to save in the morning, don’t spend time on your phone checking emails watching TV or browsing through Instagram and Pinterest. I used to lose 30 minutes of time in the morning just looking at “one thing” on my phone. Your morning will run more smoothly and without the distractions.
7. Make Sure You Eat Breakfast
If there’s one meal of the day that needs to be quick, it’s breakfast. Nobody has 20 – 30 minutes to spend on breakfast most mornings. A cold breakfast is quicker and often healthier than anything you need to cook. Cereal, granola, and muesli are great options to save time in the morning.
There’s no need to spend your money on an on the go breakfast. You also never have to skip breakfast. Find what works for you. You can also get a coffee maker with an auto-brew setting. You set it before bed, so your coffee is hot and ready when you wake up.
Save Time In The Morning And Get Out Of The House Faster
Develop the habits necessary to leave you feeling less stressed and overwhelmed. Being intentional about how you use your time will boost productivity. Get used to creating purposeful habits so they become easier to do regularly and consistently.
Prioritize things you need to do, over what you feel enjoy doing.
Get your spouse, partner, and kids involved in creating an effective morning routine. A routine that works for you and your family is one which you are more likely to follow and stick with.

These are great tips. As a stay at home mom, I don’t leave the house a lot, other than to take our kids to the park that we can walk to. However, it can be helpful to those who work outside the home for sure.
Great ideas!! Great list!! I’m always looking for ways to maximize my time in the morning.
I need to read this, thanks for sharing the tips, yes morning are always crazy hectic. I don’t know what to tell more.
Hahahahahahaha! You need to read this? LOL. So I guess you just scrolled down to comment. Then why even bother?
These are really effective ideas, especially when I do these back in college. Now that I am working adult, I kinda slacking a bit.
I definitely need to be more disciplined with number 3 and 4. I wake up early but then take forever in the shower and end up being late. I also pick the outfit the night before, but then I don’t want to wear it the next day and I end up wasting a lot of time picking other outfit. Need to improve those areas for sure. Thanks for the tips!

These are nice tips. I don’t go to office otherwise I would be the one following these tips 🙂
This is not specific to people who leave home and go to work, but also many who work from home but need to get kids out of the house, or who do other jobs that are not at a desk.
I wish it were this simple! My kids have to wear uniforms to school everyday, so they always have their clothes picked out for them and all they have to do is eat breakfast and get dressed. It sounds simple, but I’m always constantly reminding them, “Stop playing at the table. Stop talking. If I can hear you talking, then you’re not eating.” Ugh!
I must say these are good but when I’m in Italy I’m all spoiled because I become lazy when I’m home, all my work gets done and my guy is a great help.
I work from home so I’m pretty spoiled these days when it comes to morning routines. My husband likes to prep his lunch and clothes the night before. I think it’s super helpful for him.
Preparing lunch the night before is such a lifesaver. I am busier during the days than during nights so it is easier for me if I prepare what to cook for lunch the night before.
I actually have very relaxed mornings because I work from home. I like to wake up and have my coffee in bed, then get ready for my gym class, which I go to every day. It’s been years since I last set up an alarm clock, I usually just wake up naturally.
These are all great tips. I am all for taking a shower the night before and making coffee at home.
Definitely planning in advance helps!! Pack your bag, and leave everything by the door – you’re so right. I am the type to always get up SUPER EARLY to make sure I have time for EVERYTHING I need to do before rushing out the door. Thank goodness I am a morning person!
I’ll try these. I am NOT a morning person, so I am so sluggish in the mornings. I do always choose clothes the night before since I can’t make many decisions first thing.
My morning is already pretty streamlined, although I do get up a little early to get some blog work done. Luckily I wear scrubs so no choosing clothes for me!
