Why Is It Necessary To Stop Learning And Start Doing?
Have you ever felt as if something is holding you back from getting what you want? You might spend too much time learning. Yes – you could be stuffing your head with too much information. That’s why it is important to stop learning and start doing.
We all have goals we want to achieve in our lives. Goals can range from learning a new language, starting a business to eating healthier and becoming a better parent, friend, colleague and so on.
Did you know your mind cannot tell the difference between perception and reality unless you tell it? There is so much to read on the internet you can end up reading for hours on end. Telling yourself that you are learning. While this might be true, it may hinder your progress.
Have you ever done a Google search for something and ended up hours later not having found the initial information because you went reading from one thing to the next? Twelve tabs open simultaneously?
That’s me. I know better than to multi-task, somehow I end up doing it, anyway. In the past, I used to be so scared of taking action, but always knew I loved to write. I had no choice but to finally do something.
Jumping Right Into It
When I started my blog , I simply did it. I did not know of blogging, SEO, Pinterest or Wordpress. I recognized I needed a platform to share my thoughts and experiences, so I just did it. And here I am, LOL. Loving every minute of it. It is a ton of work and so much to learn that’s true. Reading daily was my initial strategy to figure out how to get things done. That’s all fine and dandy but not the best choice.
Now, that I have gotten the hang of this blog world (well, kind of – I am a work in progress as is my blog) I rely less on reading what others have done and try things out myself.
A lot of it is learning by doing. I attempt many things regarding writing, setting up my website, design, social media etc.
Try and fail. But hey, if you’re not failing, you are not taking action, which could translate to not willing to push yourself to your highest potential. It can be hard to believe in yourself, but if you don’t how can you expect others to?
‘
So How Do You Stop Learning and Start Doing?
It is more productive to focus on one thing at a time and get it done. You will achieve your goals in a more focused and effective way.
In every moment you are given the opportunity to do something different – every moment of everyday you are offered the opportunity to change. To do better than the day before.
Wouldn’t you rather live your life than spending all day learning how to live it? Don’t let education to get in the way of taking action.
None of us are perfect and we will never be perfect. When you stop learning and start doing, you begin to take action. See results. Don’t worry about not getting it right the first time, most of us don’t.
Or about being perfect ( I am a perfectionist – I know how hard this can be).
Many times I have felt lost, confused. Asked myself if it is all worth it. Do you ever feel that way?
You have to remain consistent. Seeking constant self- improvement, not comparing myself to others. I try to improve a little bit each day. After all, that is what I blog about. I use positive affirmations to get me through some tough days. If you can do the same, you will start to see amazing things happen.
The great thing when you stop learning and start doing is feeling motivated and encouraged. If you do not succeed on your first try, use that as motivation to gain new strategies to do better the next time. When you consistently apply what you have learned, you will make progress.
Don’t Let Fear Of Failure Hold You Back
New results do not necessarily mean new knowledge. When you consistently apply what you have learned, you will make progress.
Learning is valuable until it becomes a form of procrastination. A hindrance blocking you from moving forward in whatever goals you have set for yourself.
Fear of failure may make you strive to learn more but not take action. Stop learning and start doing today because there is no “perfect” time. Make “now” the best time.
I lived in fear or failure for way too many years. Sometimes that fear still creeps up, sneaks into my heart, gets in my head- but I am getting really good at sending it away with positive affirmations. (Free download)
Focus your skills, energy and abilities into the process. Doesn’t matter if you are an actress, an author, a blogger, a nurse, a fashion expert. Work on perfecting your skill.

Constraints Force You To Stop Learning And Start Doing
Time constraints can be very helpful in maintaining focus. If you are committed to the constraints you set for yourself such as goals, timelines and deadlines, you will notice how much easier it is for you to complete tasks – even if you don’t want to.
Have you ever set a deadline for yourself, and on the day it’s due you just can’t be bothered?
Had a hard day at work, too tired? In a bad mood? I can empathize with that feeling. We’ve all been there. Unless there is an emergency, the important thing to do is to complete the task anyway.
Jump over that hurdle and just do it. You will notice after a while that you are even saving time and boosting productivity.
So now it’s time to stop learning and start doing. Stop reading books, and how-to guides. Stop watching youtube videos, and listening to podcasts. Take action today!
Now, this by no way means you should never learn another thing in life ever again. That would be silly. I am just saying, prioritize and plan.
I have put together a goal setting guide with templates and checklists that will help you put your goals down in one place and prioritize. Grab your guide below.
The worksheets and templates will help you:
- Write down your goals
- Break larger goals into smaller achievable parts
- Track your progress daily
- Create routines that support your goals
Success comes first and foremost from doing. Don’t sit back and plan your garden, instead, sow the seeds, plants seeds of success and watch amazing things happen.
Share in the comments below your strategies for getting motivated and taking action. I would love to learn how you go about getting things done.

I really love your blog and it is so great to read your story!
This is so true. I read a lot about blogging in general before actually launching my blog. And I learnt a lot more starting doing!
Isn’t that the truth? We spend so much time in analysis instead of actually doing.
YESSSS. This is so me sometimes. I have too many ideas, information overload from researching, and not enough time to DO anything about it.
This is a wonderful post. You are absolutely right. Sometimes we spend so much time trying to learn and it does make us tired. We need to learn from kids and just start doing things. It would be fun.
Love that you mentioned fear of failure. That is one of my biggest hurdles. I’ve learned that taking baby steps and setting small steps is huge when overcoming fears. 🙂
I remember the saying, “Paralysis by analysis.” It’s like learning only without application.
Always make a game plan first. Some call it setting goals. Big list maker here. So I know all the steps it will take to get me to the finish line.
I’m 50 and I think I just realized this year that I’m always going to be a learner. I used to thing I’d have things figured out by the time I got to this point in life but nope…I don’t. And that is really okay.
This is such an inspirational post! You’re so right that sometimes you just need to start doing it!
It can be so hard to stop learning and start doing. You can fail when you are just learning! Such good advice!
Such great tips. Sometimes too when you learned a lot of things, it gets confusing.
I find the older I get, the less concerned I am with failing. I just try to put myself in the mindset of just do it or you will regret it forever.
Great tips for getting things done. I need some extra help right about now with my summer slumps.
I agree with everything you’ve written in this post. There are times we let opportunity pass us by because we give an excuse like, “I’m not yet ready,” “I am still in a learning phase.” That won’t help at all. Take the chance and if we fail, then that is how we learn. Tweaking a process to reach a goal is the best way to do it.
This is a great post and I wonderful reminder that I need to get myself in gear to push myself further. I am always trying to find ways of learning more. But I know I need to also apply what I’ve learned.
Thanks for this advice! I feel like I have so much to learn when it comes to making money on my blog, but trying different tactics is bound to work one of these days!
I think the fear of failure keeps so many people from taking the leap from learning to doing. There does come a time when you have to take that leap of faith. I remember how nervous I was to hit publish on my first blog post. Looking back, I’m so glad I did!
This is such a great post, I really need to sit and write some lists and goals down to how I can start to achieve the goals I am trying to get to.
That’s an interesting approach. I believe there’s always room to learn and it’s good to learn somethign every day. But it is also good to start trying to do something while learning.
Yes that’s my point Valerie, I don’t think in the long run it makes sense to continuously learn and not actually put what you are learning into practice.
I like to break down my goals into more achievable ones like you said so that failure becomes a less daunting thing! This motivates me to succeed until my end goal is achieved! I think this way it takes the pressure off a bit so that ultimately I’ll succeed better! I think for me this is one of the better ways of learning – especially breaking large chunks into smaller ones so that I can understand it better!
[…] Stop learning and start doing and watch things fall into place for you. […]
Really great tips! I think fear of failure holds me back sometime, but you’ll never learn unless you try!
There are times when I feel creatively clogged and when that happens I go for a run. Usually three miles at least. It takes the pressure and the edge off and allows my creative juices to flow. I listen to a lot of music also and that keeps me motivated outside of my children.
I also think while you are doing, you will learn too. This is how I learn and hands-on learning works so well for me!
quit waiting for everything to be perfect should be tattooed on my body because it is advise i always seem to forget!
That’s the thing, waiting on perfection will only lead to disappointment. Be the best you can be and let that be your “perfect” 🙂
I am exactly the same. A bit of a scatter brain all over the place
I have always been a better hands-on learner than a book-learner and I think that has translated to my adult life. I was thinking about blogging for almost 6 months before I made the leap. I just felt like i needed to learn as much as possible through research before I started but you are so right, You learn SO much from doing. Chase your dreams!
You really seem like a very warm-hearted person, please continue to glow in your approach
Thank you so much, I am a warm-hearted person and I hope to be better every singe day. Have a great weekend 🙂
I am very much guilty of this. Although I am doing things one by one, there are times that I get to doubt my actions. What interest me about life is that no matter how much things we learn, we get to make mistakes still. Well, that’s just how life works, perhaps.
Application is always more important that theoretical learning. That will signify that your learning is complete. Plus, in real life there are some lessons best learn thru experience. Trial and error is actually life’s rhythm
Such a great post. This is so true for everything in life. You can learn theory as much as you want but unless you don’t get to doing it, you’ll never know.
I was a perfectionist. But now I don’t wait till I complete my learning to start doing. Something I learned through my blogging journey. Great read!
This is so true and exactly how I felt about blogging before actually just getting started, you learn as you go. I’m not worried about failing, it always teaches you something and helps you improve, even if little by little.
Failing is part of the progress, but sometimes we’re so afraid to fail and it stops us doing the action. Beautiful post, and encouraging too.
This is so true, I can read about how to do something (sometimes a few times) but its only with actually doing it myself that I learn how to do things. I certainly pick things up faster by doing rather than listening/reading.
I think that’s what worries me the most- fear of failing before even starting. I’m trying to just be bolder and do things instead of always procrastinating.
Yes I recognize that fear as well. It always holds back 🙁 It should not be like that in our heads actually
Loved this! I agree with everything. I believe that the best way to learn things is to do them.
Making the most of now. It’s so important to do things instead of waiting or keep learning. By the way, learning from doing things is a good way. I always use SMART goals, you know them??
Yes, I learned about SMART goals a few years ago, I use them mostly professionally and it is a good guide to follow when putting your goals into writing and setting a vision.
I totally agree! Thank you for inspiring me with this post❤
This is so true, reading is good but also doing it is what makes is a lot better than just reading . Great points and article.
Great post Sheri! So very true! 9 months ago, I didn’t know what any of those things were, I didn’t even know what WordPress was. Spent 3 months reading and researching and playing around and by fall, I decided it was time to just do! Now I am doing my own code customizations, Building a strong following on Pinterest and more! Its amazing what you can do if you put your mind to it! I agree, sometimes you have to put the learning aside and just get out there and do, don’t worry if you fall, just get back up and do it again 🙂 In a sense there is only so much you can learn from reading, the rest is learning from our mistakes. Love this post 🙂
I just love this, I was the same way, I knew nothing and started writing to just have a platform because I moved to a different state and had no outlet and no one to really talk to. Now I’m writing about topics I love and making a little extra cash…. I’m still learning too. But if I fail its better than not trying at all!
I love this post! It is so true! When I started blogging I didn’t know anything. I decided jumping in was the best way to do it even though there was a huge learning curve, everything I learned embedded itself in my heart to be a better blogger. I loved your line because I am a perfectionist too…:quit waiting for everything to be perfect. If you do wait, you will never blog…LOL I’m all about positive affirmation!
that is so true. none of us are perfect and none of us will ever be. we can only strive to be the best in our own lives.
Excellent post! Many of us have studied for years or even decades without actually achieving anything they dream of. I totally agree with you that the best way for learning is to start doing and learn while doing the things you love. However it can sometimes be really hard to decide when your ready to start doing. For example what comes to blogging I’ve dreamed of making my blog self hosted and even though I know quite lot I still not feel completely ready for it (after blogging 5 +3 year, 5 with my old blog and 3 with this one). I’ve always written and taking the photos but I don’t feel like being ready to be the nerd behind it all.
This is so true. reminds me of college and the application of ideas learned. You can read a book until you are blue in the face but can you really understand it until you practice it?
This post hits home. I am presently doing my second masters and a colleague of mine said to me “Esther you need to stop studying and start gaining experience with your certificates”. At that point I realised I was just accumulating knowledge and not making good use of it. Like you rightly said, I need to stop learning and start doing.
Thank you so much for the goal setting guide. I started out with a list of goals for 2017 and I’m beginning to lose steam. This might help re-energize me.
I love this quote: “your mind cannot tell the difference between perception and reality unless you tell it”. That is SO true. I’ve only been blogging for 7 months, and I too started without prior knowledge of a lot of things. Had I read about all the things I now know, I’m sure I never would have done this. I love it nonetheless, and have no regrets. Real knowledge comes over time and through application of the things learned anyway.
Thanks for this post.
This is so true and applies to so many different aspects of life. I think it’s an important thing for people to remember…and to actually get out and do it!
