5 Quick and Easy Ways To Practice Winter Self-Care And Wellness Daily
Here in Austria, the snow has fallen, an icy chill in the air. Overnight the windshields are frozen, covered in snow. Winter is here. I have been dreading this as I always feel a little bit cold. I have lots of things I do different seasonally. So here are my five great tips for winter self-care and wellness.
What can you do but embrace it? It’s no winter wonderland, but it might get there by Christmas. Did you know that Christmas in Austria is celebrated on the 24th of December? And the tree doesn’t go up until that very day? Do you do anything differently in the winter to stay healthy and well?
1. Stay Active
Yes, it is hard to go outside when it’s cold, however, if you bundle up well, all you need is a minimum of a 15-minute walk outside, that’s all it takes to make a difference, raise energy levels and promotes a healthy mood.
2. Eat Your Protein
Your body uses protein to build and repair tissues. During the winter months, a lot of us increase our sugar intake as well as our daily carbohydrate intake. Eating more protein may reduce cravings and desire for late-night snacking. A high-protein diet reduces hunger too.

3. Don’t Forget Your Fruit and Veggies
You should be having fruit and veggies every day. There are so many seasonal fruits to choose from. There’s bound to be something you like. I have a sweet tooth, so in winter I tend to ignore the healthy stuff more. Cabbage, brussels sprouts, winter squash, beets, and parsnips are just a few of the many vegetables to add to your soups and food.
4. Get Some Extra Sleep
With the shorter days and longer nights, our bodies naturally need a bit more extra sleep. Sleep in also essential to winter self-care and wellness because a body that has been sleep deprived is more susceptible to illness. Sleep lets your brain catch up so you’re ready for what’s next. Go to bed 30 – 45 mins earlier than usual.
5. Get Out There and Stay Social
It is easier to stay home in bed or on the couch rather than go out and hang out with friends or family. Isolation is not good for keeping spirits high. Instead of turning inward in winter, make it a point to meet up with friends and family at least once a week.
Embrace Winter Self-Care and Wellness Strategies
While some people love the change of seasons, the colder months can be challenging for many. Either way, we should all be taking care of ourselves all year round.

Those are some wonderful tips to remember and it’s good to keep yourself healthy at all times especially during winter season where you can easily get sick.
When it comes to self care, I’m the worst! I tend to take care of the rest of my family first. I need all the tips!
I am upping my protein as we speak. You will be surprised how the weather changes can effect your immune system and nutrient intake.
Self-care is a must, especially in the cold winter months! For me, eating fruits and veggies always helps!
These are practical tips that I badly need. (haha!) Thank you for reminding me to stay active. I have been neglecting to go to the gym with all the holiday festivities. Sleep is also another story. I super appreciate this post. Thank you for reminding us to take care of ourselves.
great tips. self care is such a key all year. i think in the winter we need more sleep than ever as we tend to get more sad.
good list of ideas. i need to make my family’s butternut squash soup this holiday season speaking of veggies. 🙂
Wwwoooaaahhh…I didn’t know about the 24th in Austria! Blogging is traveling, isn’t it, Sheri? One thing is for sure….I will need quite a lot of sleep! There is too much this holiday I don’t want to miss out on.
Extra sleep and more water are two big ones for me during the winter. Both of those help me keep my immune system at its best, which I need with all the kids running in and out of my house.
This are extremely great tips for winter.
Thanks for the tips, Sheri! Here in Phoenix, Arizona, the weather is quite different, most of the time sunny and clear skies, the high today will be 60 F. But with that say all those tips you suggested still apply! 🙂
I personally like staying active during the winter. Heat is not my friend, and, the kids really enjoy being outside in the winter, sledding, building snowmen or going skiing. I always feel more in hibernation mode when it comes to winter.
